This in spite of the fact that they may work only a handful of hectares and that their production is therefore extremely reserved, limited to a small number of connoisseurs and loyal customers who visit the cellar just to capture a few bottles, they say, but in reality because a return trip to the Langhe is for them a real treat. One of these micro-producers was founded 30 years ago, in 1974, by Cavalier Enrico Bergadano, and it is still rigorously family-run today, directed by his son Piercarlo assisted by his wife Silvana, a situation not at all unusual for small winemaking operations, where the passing of the reins to the next generation means not a break or any kind of traumatic experience, but a transfer of a wealth of personal experience. Silvana herself is “bred to the business,” since her family, too, are winegrowers, but at La Morra. And there, too, her family has an agriturismo, Cascina Rocca, where the cordial bond between the two families means that the wines of each may be tasted, perhaps taking advantage of the tasty appointment to enjoy a light evening repast, in which a flight of 5 wines is partnered with simple dishes of the traditional Langhe cuisine. From their 2 hectares of vines, located in the areas of Barolo, Monforte, and Novello, of which less than 1 hectare is dedicated to nebbiolo for Barolo, or 0.80 to be precise, with 0.45 ha of 10-year-old vines in the Sarmassa cru and 0.35 ha of 5-year-old vines in Prugnane, the Bergadano family, helped by another Molino, oenologist Sergio, produce not only Barolo, but Dolcetto d’Alba and Barbera d’Alba as well. Their Barolo, averaging 4,000 bottles, comes from the prestigious and valuable cru of Sarmassa, and receives a traditional upbringing, with fairly lengthy fermentations, though not as long as in the era when Cavalier Enrico began his activities, and maturation in casks of various sizes. |
