In every important and respectful wine village, there is always a winery that in some way or another is the symbol and story behind that particular wine and it's appellation. In Barolo it is the case of that particular house, painted in yellow, right in the centre of the town. The story of Marchesi di Barolo historically belonging to the Marchesi Falletti and then passed onto the Tenuta Opera Pia Barolo, crosses path with Barolo and it's famous wine, recalling the legendary figures of the forerunners and makers of this unique wine, The Conte Camillo di Cavour, The Conte Odart, and obviously The Marchesa Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier.

In more modern times it was the Commendator Pietro Emilio Abbona, born in Barolo in 1877, who started around 1895 his activities, First in his fathers business (the Cavalier Felice Abbona & Sons) and then by buying from Agenzia della Tenuta Opera Pia Barolo a part of their vineyards and to follow, the Castello della Volta.

The Commendator Pietro Emilio Abbona, after having introduced the wine from Barolo to the most important world wide expositions of the late 1800's and early 1900's, with the help of his sisters Marina and Celestina, continued for the rest of the century to build up the winery presenting it to the world markets and therefore contributing to make Barolo wine and its town the legend it is now, dear to all gourmets and lovers of quality.

Today the Marchesi di Barolo owns 65 hectares of vineyards. The Vineyards of Barolo include also some of the best Cru's like Cannubi, Sarmassa, Coste di Rose, but also Preda, Castellero, Vignane, Boschetti, Ravera and Fossati, which represent the excellence of the 'Barolo from Barolo'. Other distinguished CRU's are the vineyards on the hills of Paiagal and Boschetti which produce outstanding grapes for the Barbera and the Dolcetto. Together with these prestigious CRU's more beautiful vineyards are cultivated in the area of Bussia in Monforte, Rocche dell'Olmo e Riva Rocca in Verduno. Marchesi di Barolo are able therefore to produce many Barolo's, each one with it's own strong personality, faithful reflections of the soil, it's exposure and the microclimate of the area they grow in.

These wines can be tasted in the spacious winery, open from 10:30 am to 5 pm, to which is well worth combining a tour of the historical wine cellars that host some 35000 bottles starting from the mid 1800's. One can then enjoy the foresteria where a distinguished and elegant restaurant suggests every day traditional recipes to match the beautiful wines of the Marchesi di Barolo.

Barolo of a different style, between tradition and modernity.

Sarmassa, Cannubi, and Coste di Rose, with a maceration of 8 - 10 days are aged for about 2 years, part in Slavonian oak barrels, part in French oak of 30 and 35 hectolitres and a part in small barrels of 225 litres of French oak, are assembled before bottling.

Barolo from the municipality of Barolo starts ageing in lightly toasted barrels for the first year and then for another 12 months in more traditional oak barrels. The Barolo Riserva della Casa matures slowly, for 24 - 36 months in traditional oak Casks.
